What are insulated roof panels?

Insulated roofing panels are a highly effective solution for adding the finishing touch to your pitched roof. They combine the finish, insulation and protection – all in a single product. We manufacture the sheets in various shapes and sizes for our customers on our own modern production lines in Ede. A sandwich roofing panel consists of three components:

1. A profiled metal exterior skin: This is the outer layer of the roofing panel, with a robust, weatherproof coating.
2. PIR insulation core: To insulate the panel, we apply a layer of PIR insulation to the profiled sheet under high pressure. PIR is a unique composition of various chemical components. The thicker the insulation core, the higher the insulation value of your insulated roofing panel. FALK also offers a circular version of the insulation core for roof panels, the CradleCore®.
3. A profiled metal interior skin: The combination of two steel sheets with insulation in between creates a ‘sandwich’ effect. The result? A strong, rigid product. The interior skin also provides a sleek, hard-wearing finish.

To manufacture our prefabricated roof panels with insulation, we buy the necessary raw materials – steel coils and chemicals for making the PIR insulation – from our suppliers. We profile these steel coils into the desired model, after which we apply a layer of the PIR insulation in the desired thickness. We then cut the panels to size and package them carefully, so that they are ready for shipping to your site – which we take care of ourselves in our own lorries.

Why choose insulated steel roof panels?

There are several advantages to a pitched roof made of metal sheets with an insulated core. As mentioned above, an insulated roof panel combines three features in one product: insulation, protection and the finish. This also results in a much lower cost per square metre of roof than a tiled roof, for example.

If, at a later date, you want to install an accessory on your insulated roof (e.g. solar panels, tiles or sedum), the sandwich panel is the perfect base. Before going ahead with these plans, however, you first need to calculate whether your construction is actually strong enough. Types of insulated roofing

It will come as no surprise to hear that everyone has their own preferences when it comes to insulated roof panels. Here at FALK, we stock a wide range of models. As the inventor of the insulated corrugated panel, we have been using the FALK 1000 GL Roof since the foundation of our company. This panel has since been installed on thousands of roofs in the Netherlands. We also have two versions of the insulated trapezoidal sheet – the FALK 1000 TR Roof and the FALK 1100 TR3+ Roof.

EKO roof panels versus sandwich roofing panels

We offer two types of insulated roof panels: standard sandwich panels and EKO elements. Standard sandwich panels consist of a PIR insulation core sandwiched between two steel sheets; EKO elements have a layer of aluminium foil instead of an interior skin made of steel. This eliminates the sandwich effect, which is why we call it an element. Although the aluminium foil is resistant to ammonia vapours emitted in stables, it is easily scratched and the finish is not as sleek as a standard sandwich panel. All our insulated panels are also available as EKO elements. These are the FALK 1000 GL EKO, the FALK 1000 TR EKO and the FALK 1100 TR3+ EKO.

Which types of roof are suitable for FALK insulated panels?

There are many types of roofs out there, each of which can be subdivided into several varieties. Below is a brief overview of the most common types of roof, in which we also explain whether they can be insulated with FALK roof panels. Generally speaking, our insulated panels can be installed on any type of roof with a pitch of 4 degrees or more.

Gable roof with insulated panels:

The gable roof is the most common type of roof. A steeply pitched roof creates additional living space underneath the structure of the roof. Gable roofs consist of two opposing sloping roof surfaces, connected by the ridge – the point at which the two sides meet. The sides are constructed at an angle, onto which wooden or steel trusses are mounted. The insulated panels can then be attached to these trusses using special panel fixing screws. They are usually fastened to the highest parts of the insulated roof panels to prevent water and dirt accumulation.

Pent roof with insulated panels:

The pent roof is also a common type of roof. Unlike the gable roof, the pent roof is a sloping roof with a singular surface. Here, too, the sides of the building are constructed at an angle, onto which wooden or steel trusses are mounted. The insulated roof panels can be fixed to these trusses using special screws designed for sandwich panels. These are available in different colours.

Hip roof with insulated panels:

A hip roof is actually a gable roof, but with four sloping roof surfaces (sides) that meet at the ridge. The surfaces of a hip roof usually have the same pitch. This type of roof can also be effectively insulated with roofing panels. The main challenge here lies in connecting the surfaces of the roof.

Mansard roof with insulated panels:

A mansard roof is a gable roof where the upper part is less steep than the lower part. This creates more space under the roof structure than a standard gable roof. FALK insulated roofing panels are particularly suitable for creating a mansard roof. Similar to the hip roof, the interface between the roof surfaces is the main challenge.

Flat roof with insulated panels:

A flat roof is a roof that has a horizontal roof surface. At FALK, we consider a roof to be flat if the roof pitch is between 2 and 4 degrees. A minimum pitch of 2 degrees ensures good drainage. The advantage of a flat roof is that it is easy to install accessories on it. It also allows you to get the most out of the space in a building because you do not have to contend with sloping roof surfaces. Flat roofs can also be fitted with insulated panels.
